What are the new 2Do for iPhone and 2Do for iPad apps?
2Do for iPhone and 2Do for iPad were released in 2026 as brand-new apps, rebuilt from the ground up. They are separate App Store listings, not an update to the 2Do iOS app you may already own. This page explains what that means for you and how to move your tasks across.
What changed
There used to be a single 2Do iOS app that ran on both iPhone and iPad. It has been replaced by two apps:
- 2Do for iPhone, a one-time App Store purchase.
- 2Do for iPad, a one-time App Store purchase.
Each app is bought on its own. There is no subscription and there are no in-app purchases. Buying the iPhone app does not unlock the iPad app, and buying the iPad app does not unlock the iPhone app. Neither includes 2Do Mac, and a 2Do Mac license or Mac App Store subscription does not include them. See how each platform is licensed.
Why a new app and not an update
The App Store has no paid upgrade option. A developer who wants to charge for a major new version has three choices: make the app free with in-app purchases, switch to a subscription, or release a new app. Making the existing app free with an unlock would have changed the app everyone already owns and put its features behind an in-app purchase, and a subscription is not what we want for iPhone and iPad. A new app keeps 2Do a plain paid app with everything included and no in-app purchases.
What happens to the old app
The previous 2Do iOS app has reached the end of its life. It has received free updates since 2009 and will receive no further ones. It keeps working as it is and your tasks stay where they are, but nothing new will be posted to it. Because it is no longer updated, it cannot notify you about the new apps.
The old app is no longer sold. If you bought it, you can still re-download it from your App Store purchase history.
Do I have to pay again
Yes. The new apps are separate one-off purchases, and a purchase of the old app does not carry over. There is no free upgrade and no upgrade discount, because the App Store provides no way to offer either on a new app.
If you have already bought one of the new apps and the App Store still asks you to pay, it is almost always the wrong Apple Account or the app for your other device. 2Do for iPhone bought on an iPhone does not cover 2Do for iPad on an iPad. To download an app you already own:
- Open the App Store and tap your photo or the My Account button at the top.
- Tap Apps & Purchase History, then Your Apps. In a Family Sharing group, tap My Apps or a family member's name.
- Tap Not on this iPhone or Not on this iPad.
- Find 2Do and tap the download button.
Moving your tasks to the new app
You do not have to retype anything. Pick the route that matches how you use 2Do.
If you sync
Set the new app up against the same account and your tasks come down from the service.
- Open the old app and let it finish a sync.
- In the old app, open Settings, then Backups, and save a fresh copy outside the app with Backup to Email, or Create Backup Now followed by Save a Copy…. This is your safety net.
- Install the new app and open Settings > Sync.
- Choose the same sync method and sign in to the same account you used in the old app: iCloud, Dropbox, Reminders, Todoist, Toodledo, CalDAV, and so on.
- If the new app asks how to handle the first sync, choose Replace Local Data so it downloads everything from the service.
- Repeat on your other device.
How much arrives depends on the method. iCloud and Dropbox carry everything across, apart from lists you have excluded from sync and, on Dropbox, link-only attachments. CalDAV (including iCloud CalDAV, Fastmail, Yahoo and Fruux), Toodledo, Todoist and Apple Reminders leave more behind: Smart Lists, tag groups, list groups and unused tags, and on some of them attachments, Actions and standalone locations. See what each method syncs.
If you use one of those methods, or if any list is excluded from sync, use the backup route below first and set up sync afterwards. With only a list or two excluded, you can instead bring those back from your saved backup with Restore Selected once the first sync is done. Keep the old app installed until you have confirmed that everything arrived.
If you do not sync, or your method leaves items on the device
- In the old app, open Settings, then Backups, and save a fresh backup with Backup to Email, or Create Backup Now followed by Save a Copy…. Restore from File… accepts the older app's backup files.
- In the new app, open Settings > Backups & Export > Restore from File…, pick that file, and choose Restore Everything….
- Set up sync in the new app afterwards, with the same method and the same account you used before. If the new app asks how to handle the first sync, choose Merge, which keeps both sides and never deletes.
Deleting the old app
Before you delete the old app, check that everything you rely on is in the new one: your lists and tasks, and also Smart Lists, tag groups, attachments, and anything else you use day to day. Backups stored inside the old app are deleted along with it, so save one outside the app first, as in the steps above.
Mac and Android
2Do Mac is licensed separately. The direct download is a perpetual license with 18 months of updates, the Mac App Store edition is subscription-only, and Setapp is its own subscription. 2Do Android is unchanged: a free download from Google Play with an optional Pro upgrade.
