Task Sections

Use sections to divide one list into named groups. For example, keep Bookings and Packing in a Weekend trip list, or Repairs and Shopping in Home. Each section can contain tasks, projects, and checklists.

How Sections Work

Sections belong to regular lists and the optional Inbox. They appear when you open that list directly, while Focus Lists, Smart Lists, search results, and project views use their own grouping.

  • Tasks without a section appear above the first section.
  • A task belongs to one section at a time. A project or checklist keeps its sub-tasks with it.
  • Sections do not nest inside one another.
  • Every section uses the list's sort. For example, sorting by Due Date creates date groups inside each section. Choosing Manual lets you arrange the tasks yourself.
  • Empty sections remain visible, ready for tasks.

When completed tasks are visible, they appear in a final Done group. They keep their section membership, so marking a task incomplete returns it to its section.

Adding a Section

Open a regular list or the Inbox, close Search, and leave batch editing. Then use any of these methods:

  • Open the task toolbar's overflow menu and choose New Section.
  • Tap + at the bottom of the lists panel and choose New Section.
  • Touch and hold the list's name in the lists panel and choose New Section.
  • Touch and hold an existing section heading and choose New Section to add one immediately after it.

Enter the section name and an optional description, then tap Add. The default name, New Section, is selected so you can type over it.

Naming and Describing a Section

Touch and hold the section heading and choose Rename Section. Edit its name or description and tap Save. Tap Cancel to leave them unchanged.

The description appears below the heading in the task list. It can help explain the work in that section, such as what to pack or which room needs attention.

Collapsing a Section

Tap a section heading to hide its tasks; tap again to show them. An empty section stays open. While scrolling through a section, its heading stays at the top so you can still collapse it.

The section menu also offers Collapse Section or Expand Section when there are tasks to hide or show. Collapsing changes the view without removing tasks from the section.

Moving Tasks In and Out of Sections

For a top-level task in the current list, touch and hold its row and choose Move to Section. Tap a section to move it there, or choose No Section to put it above the sections. The choice applies immediately.

You can also drag a task onto a section heading. With manual sorting, dropping among its tasks places it at that point. With another sort, the task takes the position set by the list's sort.

To move several tasks, enter batch editing, select them, and tap Section. Choose their destination in the current list. You can also drag the selected tasks onto a section heading.

To choose a section in a different list, use Move and its destination picker. A project or checklist moves with its sub-tasks. Moving a sub-task to a list or section takes it out of its parent.

Sections in the Destination Picker

The destination picker shows a list's sections beneath its name. Projects and checklists outside sections come first, followed by sections in saved order and the projects or checklists inside them.

Choose a section when adding a task through Quick Add, changing its destination in the editor, or using Move for a task or batch selection.

  • Choosing a section puts the task in that list and section.
  • Choosing the list's own name files it outside sections.
  • Choosing a project or checklist makes it a sub-task there.
  • Empty sections are available too.

Read-only, hidden, and archived lists are not offered as task destinations. A locked list does not reveal its sections or projects until unlocked.

Arranging Sections

Drag a section by its heading's drag handle to change its order within the list. Or touch and hold the heading and choose Move Up or Move Down.

Tasks without a section remain above the sections. Reordering sections does not change the list's task sort.

To move a whole section and its tasks to another list, touch and hold its heading, choose Move to Another List…, and select a destination list.

The Section Menu

Touch and hold a section heading outside batch editing to see its commands:

  • Add Task opens a new task in that section.
  • New Section adds a section immediately after it.
  • Rename Section edits its name and description.
  • Duplicate Section copies the section and all its tasks, including projects and checklists with their sub-tasks. Completed items are copied as unfinished tasks.
  • Move Up and Move Down change section order. A command is omitted when the section is already at that end.
  • Move to Another List… moves the section and its tasks to another editable list.
  • Convert to List creates a list with the section's name, moves its tasks there, and removes the section. The description becomes the new list's notes. The list stays in the same list group, or uses Lists when converting from the Inbox.
  • Collapse Section or Expand Section changes whether its tasks are visible.
  • Delete Section removes the heading and keeps its tasks in the list, outside sections.

Conversion and deletion ask for confirmation. Android does not provide Undo for these section commands.

Editing Restrictions

Section changes require an editable, unlocked list. Read-only shared lists can show sections but do not offer commands to change them.

Close Search and return from a project or checklist to its list before arranging sections. During batch editing, use the Section or Move action for tasks; section headings cannot be dragged and their menus are unavailable.

Sections and Sync

iCloud and Dropbox sync section names, descriptions, order, and task membership between supported versions of 2Do.

Todoist syncs section names, order, and task membership. It does not sync section descriptions. Other sync methods carry the tasks without section organization.

Collapsing a section is a local viewing choice. In a shared iCloud list, section names, descriptions, order, and task membership are shared; each person can still choose their own list sort and Focus filter. See Sync.
