Sync with Todoist

Use your Todoist account to work with the same tasks in Todoist and 2Do. Todoist projects appear as 2Do lists, with their tasks, sections, and labels. Choose Todoist on your other 2Do devices and sign in with the same Todoist account.

Todoist sync works during Android's full-featured trial and requires 2Do Pro after the trial ends. Todoist also applies its own account capabilities and limits. You can use one sync method at a time for your ordinary lists; see Sync Overview.

Connect

  1. Open Settings > Sync setup > Sync Method and choose Todoist.
  2. Back in Sync setup, review the Todoist options, then tap Sign In to Todoist.
  3. Sign in on Todoist's browser page and approve access for 2Do.
  4. Return to 2Do. The account controls show Connected as followed by your Todoist email address, and the first sync starts.
  5. Keep 2Do open while it brings in your tasks.

You enter your password on Todoist's page. 2Do keeps the authorization needed to sync; it does not ask you to store your Todoist password in the app. Use an up-to-date browser that supports this sign-in, such as Chrome.

First Sync

The first connection starts Merge sync automatically. It combines this device's included lists and tasks with those in Todoist, so local work can be uploaded as well as downloaded. Let it finish before setting up your other devices.

If Todoist already has the copy you want and you need to replace this device's synced data, follow Merge or Replace. Lists excluded from sync remain on this device.

Check for separate local work

Before replacing this device's data, make a backup from Settings > Manage Backups and keep a copy off the device. Replacement removes synced lists and tasks that exist only here.

Stars, start dates, actions, and project or checklist type use the Sync Extra Task Details option described below.

Lists, Sections, and Subtasks

Todoist's Inbox uses 2Do's Inbox. Other projects become ordinary lists. List colors sync using Todoist's color palette. List groups and list notes stay local.

Sections sync their names, order, and task membership. You can create or rename a section, arrange sections, move tasks between them, or move a whole section to another list. Delete Section keeps its tasks in the list, outside sections, and archives the corresponding Todoist section. Section descriptions and the choice to collapse or expand a section stay on this device.

A 2Do project or checklist is a parent task inside a list. It becomes a Todoist parent task, while the list itself becomes a Todoist project. Keep Sync Extra Task Details on to preserve the distinction between 2Do projects and checklists.

2Do supports one level of subtasks. Sync flattens deeper Todoist hierarchies beneath their top-level parent, including updating those relationships in Todoist projects you can edit. Keep this limit in mind if you use several levels of nesting in Todoist.

Tags and Labels

2Do tags map to Todoist personal labels. Their names and assignments sync, including tags that are not yet assigned to a task. Tag groups, their order, and paused-tag settings stay local.

A shared label can appear on an imported task without being one of your personal labels. You can keep using that assignment, but rename shared labels in Todoist. 2Do cannot rename the shared label itself, and deleting its local tag does not delete that shared label from Todoist.

Reminders

Supported time alerts sync when Todoist permits reminders for the account:

  • An alert at a specific date and time.
  • An alert at a task's due time, or a whole number of minutes before it. The task must have both a due date and a due time.

Start-relative alerts, alerts after the due time, custom-day alerts, snoozes, and location reminders stay local. The reminder time can sync for both sound and silent alerts, but sound choices and other local notification settings do not.

If your Todoist account does not support these reminders, 2Do keeps the alerts on this device. Supported alerts on unfinished tasks can sync after the account gains access to reminders. Reminder quotas can also limit what Todoist accepts. See Notifications and Alarms for setting alerts and allowing Android notifications.

Start Dates, Due Dates, and Repeats

2Do's due date maps to Todoist's task date. Todoist's separate deadline is not imported into 2Do. A separate 2Do start date and time are kept in the task description when Sync Extra Task Details is on.

Dates without times keep their calendar day. Floating times keep their local clock time, while timed Todoist dates with a named time zone retain that zone and the scheduled instant. A timed Todoist due date determines the task's time zone in 2Do.

Repeating Tasks

With a due date, supported repeat patterns use Todoist's native recurrence. These include intervals in days, weeks, months, or years; selected weekdays; and an ordinal weekday such as the first Monday of each month. 2Do also recognizes English Todoist phrases such as every weekday, every workday, and every other week. The phrase every weekend is imported as Saturday; use an explicit Saturday-and-Sunday rule if you need both days.

If a repeating task has a start date and no due date, 2Do stores its full repeat rule and ending settings in the description when Sync Extra Task Details is on. Your other 2Do devices can restore them, but Todoist itself does not repeat that task. Complete it in 2Do to advance the series.

Give a start-only repeating task a due date to use a supported native Todoist repeat. Removing the due date while keeping the start date and repeat rule stores the rule in notes again. Native due-date recurrence does not carry 2Do's repeat-ending settings. Repeat after completion is kept for 2Do through the extra details in notes.

The repeat patterns the services can express differ. A Todoist rule that 2Do cannot interpret may remain managed by Todoist without appearing as an editable repeat rule in 2Do. For complex schedules, check the resulting date and next occurrence in both apps before relying on them. See Repeating Tasks for 2Do's repeat choices.

What Stays on This Device

  • Smart Lists, list groups, and tag groups, including their local arrangement.
  • Task attachments and saved locations.
  • List notes, section descriptions, and collapsed-section choices.
  • Paused-tag settings.
  • Alarm types Todoist cannot represent, local alert sounds, and snoozes.

Todoist comments and attachments are not imported into 2Do. Use iCloud or Dropbox if you need attachments and the fuller 2Do organization across your own devices.

Todoist Options

These controls appear under Settings > Sync setup when Todoist is selected.

Sync Extra Task Details

This is on by default. It adds plain-text lines to Todoist descriptions so other 2Do devices can restore:

  • Start dates and times, including an explicit midnight start.
  • Stars and task actions.
  • Project or checklist type.
  • Time-zone details that do not have a native Todoist date to carry them.
  • Repeat-from-completion settings and the full rule and ending settings for a start-only repeat.

For example, Todoist may show @startdate:2026-10-23, @starred, or @tasktype:checklist after your note text. 2Do hides recognized lines when displaying task notes. Leave these lines intact in Todoist so 2Do can restore the details.

Turn this off if you do not want these 2Do details added to Todoist descriptions. They will no longer travel to your other devices through Todoist. Duration is a separate exception: when the account cannot store native durations, 2Do uses a duration value in the description even with this switch off.

Completed Task History

Choose 3 Months, 6 Months, or 1 Year. The default is 1 Year. This controls how far back 2Do imports completed Todoist tasks during initial setup or replacement of this device's data. Re-enabling an excluded list also uses this window to catch up with completed tasks. Older completed tasks outside the import window remain in Todoist.

The import also respects Auto-Delete Completed Tasks under Settings > Appearance > More.... A shorter auto-delete interval makes the actual import window shorter. For example, choosing 1 Year of Todoist history with a three-month auto-delete interval imports only the more recent history.

Show Completed Tasks controls visibility; it does not delete tasks. Auto-Delete Completed Tasks removes tasks and those deletions can sync to Todoist. Choose Never for auto-deletion if you want to keep completed tasks. See completed-task settings.

Changing Completed Task History alone does not reload older history on the next normal sync. It applies when one of the imports above runs.

Excluding Lists

Use Exclude list from Sync to choose lists to keep only on this device. Excluded lists, their tasks, and their sections are left out of Todoist sync and are kept during Replace data on this device. This does not delete their existing Todoist copies.

When you include a list again, 2Do catches up with Todoist and sends pending local edits. Check both copies before making conflicting edits while a list is excluded. Personal tags still sync as labels independently of list exclusion.

Automatic Sync

Use Sync automatically to select an interval, or Never to sync manually. Pull down on the task list to request a sync while 2Do is open. See Daily Sync for background-sync limits.

Merge or Replace

Open Settings > Sync setup > Next sync action and choose:

  • Sync normally for day-to-day changes.
  • Merge sync to combine local and Todoist content.
  • Replace data on this device to make Todoist's copy authoritative for the lists and tasks included in sync.

Go back and confirm the choice. Return to the task list and pull down to start the sync. After a successful sync, the choice returns to Sync normally.

Todoist does not support Replace server data in 2Do: there is no command to replace the entire Todoist account with this device's copy.

A normal sync still sends individual task edits, completions, and deletions to Todoist. The absence of a whole-account replacement command does not make ordinary deletions local.

Project Permissions

Todoist controls access to shared and team projects. Read-only or frozen projects can appear as read-only lists in 2Do; syncing them does not grant editing rights. Todoist's Inbox and team projects cannot be removed through 2Do's list-deletion command. Manage the project itself in Todoist when its permissions or ownership require it.

Changing Accounts or Signing Out

Tap Sign In Again to renew access. Signing back into the same account keeps its sync progress. If the browser returns a different Todoist account from the one previously used, 2Do shows that account's email address and asks you to choose Merge sync or Replace data on this device before switching. Cancel if it is the wrong account. Back up local work before choosing replacement.

Sign Out stops Todoist syncing on this device and keeps your local tasks. To use another method, choose it under Sync Method.

Daily Sync

Keep the same Todoist account selected on your 2Do devices. Check that Sync Extra Task Details is enabled on the devices where you need 2Do-specific fields.

With automatic sync enabled, 2Do requests background sync at your chosen interval and after local changes. Android can delay background work because of battery restrictions, connectivity, and device settings. An interval does not guarantee an update at that exact time. Pull down on the task list when you need to request a sync now, and see Background Sync on Android if updates are delayed.

Troubleshooting

Browser sign-in does not finish

Use an up-to-date browser such as Chrome. Return to 2Do after approving access. If you cancel, close the browser using its Close or Back control before starting another attempt. If access has expired or been revoked, use Sign In Again in Sync setup.

Todoist asks you to wait

Todoist can limit requests, especially during a large first import. Wait before trying again; repeatedly forcing sync does not clear the limit.

A new list, task, or reminder does not reach Todoist

Check Todoist's account limits and the project's permissions. Limits can restrict projects, tasks, sections, labels, reminders, or description length. Resolve the limit or permission issue, then sync again. 2Do keeps unsent local changes while Todoist cannot accept them.

Completed tasks are missing

Check Completed Task History, Show Completed Tasks, and Auto-Delete Completed Tasks. These control different things: importing history, showing it, and deleting it. See Completed Task History before replacing this device's data to import older tasks.

A field is missing on another device

Check what syncs, whether the account supports that feature, and Sync Extra Task Details on your 2Do devices. Attachments, saved locations, and personal groups do not travel through Todoist. Shared-label names and project permissions must be managed in Todoist.

One device shows different tasks

Confirm the method and Todoist email address on each device, and check Exclude list from Sync. Sync the device with your complete copy first. Only use Replace data on this device on another device after backing up work that exists only there. See One of my devices isn't syncing correctly for general checks.
