Backups

2Do for Android can keep automatic backups of your local database. Backup files are independent of whatever sync method you use — even if sync misbehaves, a backup gives you a recovery point.

warning

Important on Android: backups are stored on your device. If you delete the 2Do app, the backups stored within its app data go with it. Always keep an off-device copy by sharing or saving backups to Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, or by emailing the backup file to yourself. The simplest habit: open Settings > Manage Backups, create or share a backup every week (or after any major change), and keep a copy somewhere outside the app. Note also: Android backup files are not compatible with iOS. Each platform has its own backup format. Use sync, not backups, to move data between an iPhone and an Android device.

Backup Settings

Open Settings > Manage Backups. From there you can configure:

  • Automatic backups — never, every 24 hours, or every 48 hours.
  • Maximum backups to keep — 5, 10, 20, or 30.
  • Backup before performing Sync — create a backup before sync runs.
  • Backup location — use app storage, or choose a folder through Android's folder picker.

What's Included

  • All lists, list groups, projects, checklists, tasks.
  • All tags and tag groups.
  • All Smart Lists, Search Presets, and Focus Filter rules.
  • App preferences stored in the local database.

Restoring

Open Settings > Manage Backups and tap Restore Now, or long-press a backup in the list and choose the restore action.

warning

Restoring replaces your current data. Share the latest backup first if you're unsure.

Opening Backup Files from Other Apps

Android can offer 2Do as an app for opening .2dobackup and .2dobundle files from Files, email, cloud storage, or another app. Choose 2Do when Android asks which app should open the file.

important

Opening a backup file is a restore flow. It can replace the current local data on that Android device, so make sure you have a recent copy of your current data first.

Sharing a Backup

Open Settings > Manage Backups, long-press a backup, and use the share action. Android then shows the share sheet so you can send the backup to email, cloud storage, or another compatible app.

Migrating to a New Device

Two options:

  1. Sync method — install 2Do on the new device, sign in to the same sync provider, choose Replace local data with server data.
  2. Backup file — share the latest backup from the old device, save it somewhere accessible to the new Android device, install 2Do on the new device, then restore it.

Tips

tip

If your Android setup includes another app or service that backs up folders, point 2Do's backup folder there. You'll have an off-device copy without changing how 2Do works.

tip

Before changing sync providers, share a backup. Sync changes can be lossy for unsupported task properties — a backup is your safety net.
