Multiple Windows

Sometimes one window isn't enough: you want your Today list open while you plan a project in another list, or a reference checklist visible on a second monitor. 2Do lets you open as many independent windows as you like, each with its own view into the same underlying tasks.

Opening a New Window

• File > New Window (⌃⌥⌘N).
• Right-click (or Control-click) the 2Do icon in the Dock and choose New Window.

There's no toolbar button for this; it's a menu and Dock action. A new window opens as a copy of the window you were just in, and from that point on the two windows go their own separate ways.

Every Window Is Independent

Each window is a fully separate view of your tasks. Open two, and the following are tracked per window, so changing one never disturbs the other:

• The list, group, or project selected in the Lists Panel.
• The task selection and highlight.
• The search field — its text, its scope (current list vs. all lists), and any active date range.
• The window frame — position and size on screen.
• The Lists Panel and Utility Panel widths and whether each is shown or hidden.
• The Mini Calendar visibility and the find-bar visibility.
• The scroll position in the task list.

So you can leave one window parked on Today, sized small in a corner, while another sits full-width on a big project, and each remembers exactly how you left it.

A window's sort order and Focus Filter are not per-window; they belong to the list, not the window. If two windows are showing the same list, they share that list's sort order and focus settings; change the sort in one and it changes in the other. Only selection, search, panel layout, and window geometry stay separate. See The Sort Bar and Focus Filter.

Windows Reopen Across Launches

Additional windows aren't throwaway. Quit 2Do with two or three windows open and they come back the next time you launch: same lists, same layout, same positions. 2Do restores the whole set, so your multi-window workspace survives restarts.

If you're done with a window, close it explicitly (⌘W or the red close button). Closing an additional window discards its saved state, so it won't reappear on the next launch. (The main window always comes back.)

The standard Window menu lists every open 2Do window, so you can hop between them by name, alongside 2Do (⇧⌘1), which brings the main window forward.

File > New Window is unavailable while 2Do is password-locked. Unlock the app first, then open the extra window.

Tips

tip

A second window is the fastest way to keep a reference list (a shopping list, project notes, a checklist you're working through) visible while you triage a different list in the main window. Size it small and park it in a corner; its frame is remembered independently of the main window.

Because search scope is per-window, you can run an all-lists search in one window while another stays pinned to a single list; handy for comparing "everything matching X" against "just this project."
