Multiple Windows

Sometimes one window is not enough: you want Today open while you plan a project in another list, or a reference checklist beside the list you are working through. On iPad, 2Do opens as many windows as you like, each with its own view of the same tasks.

Opening a New Window

With a hardware keyboard attached, press ⌃⌥⌘N, or choose File > New Window from the menu bar. You can also open a second window the standard iPadOS way, by dragging the 2Do icon from the Dock to the side of the screen or opening a new window from the app's icon menu.

⌘N is not the shortcut for this: on iPad it stays New Task, the same as everywhere else in the app.

Multiple windows are an iPad feature. On iPhone, 2Do runs in a single window.

Every Window Is Independent

Each window is a separate view of the same database. The following belong to the window, so changing one leaves the other alone:

• The list, group, project, or checklist currently selected.
• The task selection and the highlighted row.
• The search field: its text, its scope, its sounds-like setting, and any active date range.
• The scroll position in both the lists panel and the task list.
• Which sections are collapsed.
• Which panel is currently landed on when the window is narrow enough to slide.

So one window can sit on a single project while another runs an all-lists search, and neither disturbs the other.

A list's sort order and Focus Filter belong to the list, not to the window. Two windows showing the same list share those, so changing the sort in one changes it in the other. See The Sort Bar and Focus Filter.

Dragging Tasks Between Windows

Touch and hold a task in one window and drag it into the other. Every drop target behaves the same as it does within a single window: drop on a list to file the task there, on Today to make it due today, on Starred to star it, on Done to complete it, on a tag in the Tags panel to apply it, or on a date in the mini calendar to set its due date.

Both windows update as soon as the drop lands, so the task list you dragged from reflects the change immediately. See Drag and Drop.

Windows Reopen the Way You Left Them

2Do saves each window's state as you work, so a window you leave open comes back with the same list selected, the same search, and the same scroll position. Closing a window from the iPadOS app switcher discards that window's saved state, so it does not reappear later.

Tips

tip

A second window is the quickest way to keep a reference list in view (shopping, project notes, a checklist you are working through) while you triage a different list in the first one. Size it narrow and park it beside the main window.

Because search is per window, you can run an all-lists search in one window while the other stays pinned to a single project, which makes comparing "everything matching this" against "just this project" a glance rather than a round trip.
