Password Protection
Some tasks are nobody else's business. 2Do lets you lock individual lists or the whole app behind a password.
Setting a Password
- 2Do > Settings > Security — enable password protection and set a password.
- You can use Touch ID to unlock if your Mac supports it.
Locking the Whole App
Once you've set a password, click the padlock in the window title area to lock the whole app, or let 2Do lock after a period of computer inactivity. The app hides its content and asks for the password before showing it again. Auto-lock intervals are configured under 2Do > Settings > Security > Protection.
Locking Individual Lists
Right-click a list in the Lists Panel → Lock. A locked list asks for the master password before its tasks are shown. You can lock as many lists as you like. Each lock uses the global app password — there's not a separate password per list, by design. To unlock a single list, click it in the sidebar and enter the password.
Hiding Unwanted Lists Entirely
Distinct from locking, 2Do lets you hide lists from the sidebar entirely. Useful for built-in Focus Lists you never use (the Scheduled Focus List, for example) or any real list you'd rather not see day-to-day:
- Open 2Do > Settings > Security > Privacy.
- Click the lock icon to make changes — authenticate yourself.
- Tick the lists you want to hide from the Lists Panel.
Hidden lists vanish from the Lists Panel completely. As the Security screen notes, tasks in the selected lists stay hidden everywhere — including Smart Lists — until you unlock them.
Hidden lists are still part of your 2Do data. If you want a list and its tasks excluded from sync entirely, use 2Do > Settings > Sync > Exclusions instead.
What's Protected
A locked or hidden list is meant to keep its tasks out of normal browsing until you unlock it. Depending on the option you use, this can include:
- The Lists Panel.
- Focus Lists like All, Today, Starred.
- Search results. A locked app hides the main interface until you unlock it.
Sync and Locking
Locking is local to each device. Sync continues to run for protected task data, but each device controls its own password and Touch ID settings. Configure locking separately on every device you use.
Resetting a Forgotten Password
If you forget the password:
- If you sync via Dropbox or CalDAV, you may be able to recover by reinstalling 2Do, restoring from sync, and choosing a new password.
- On a single-device install, there's no backdoor for unlocking protected content without the password. We recommend pairing password protection with regular Backups.
Tips
Use a password manager. 2Do's lock is a layer of privacy, not a substitute for a strong, unique password.
Use Security > Privacy for lists you'd rather not see in the sidebar during normal browsing. Use Lock when you want the list to remain visible but require the password before opening its contents.
